Symposium: Nutopia - Exploring the Metropolitan Imagination
- added: 10 March 2009
Safle have kindly extended an invitation to all those who are interested to the above event.
With speakers from across the UK, Europe and beyond, Nutopia explores ways in which we can reinvent our cities, challenging
the idea that city centres are purely spaces of consumption. Instead we look at possibilities for non-economic exchange and
examine tensions between resistance and commodification and how this impacts our personal lives.
Nutopia will look at the creation and ownership of cities in the face of privatisation and the language of regeneration. It will
look beyond physical space, exploring place as a perceptual landscape informed by a linguistic architecture.

In a bid to bring the architectural community in South Wales a wide variety of professionally relevant events, Design Circle is working together with the Student Association of the Welsh School of Architecture (SAWSA) to present a series of lectures that should stimulate and inform.
The series is part of a wider effort to support the society by providing a wider audience for society activities, as well as providing a potential additional source of guest speakers, funding and support. At the same time, students can contribute more directly to the South Wales architectural community. As part of this effort, the SAWSA chair, Edward Dyhouse, taken up position as a Design Circle committee member.
Design Circle Formalised

After a series of informal meetings aimed at reforming the previously disbanded South Wales Branch of the RSAW, Design Circle is now formally the voice of Architects and Architecture in the South Wales Region.

Andrew Sutton was voted in to continue his role, albeit now on an official basis, as chair of the branch, together with Jonathon Jones as treasurer and Pierre Wassenaar as Secretary. The team will be completed by an enthusiastic committee, who have already made significant inroads to make Design Circle the network and voice of architects that South Wales deserves.
