The brief: to provide a convenient and easily managed house close to the town centre for a married couple. Although ‘empty nesters’, children and grandchildren are frequent visitors, and entertaining friends is an important requirement.
The site is in a conservation area and close under the mediaeval citadel, sloping steeply. Vehicular access to the site is narrow and restricted, and deliveries of bricks or blocks for traditional masonry construction would be virtually impossible. At an early stage it was decided to use a steel frame with light timber infill and flush external panels which would have an affinity with the painted rendered walls of the neighbouring buildings.
