_mudo OR ‘mud-o’ is the heart of a new cycle network that provides a journey through the south wales valleys. A journey that is a route through both the rich and varied landscape but also one which highlights change and historical element that have gone into making the area what it is today. The journey is encapsulated in the translation from Welsh of MUDO-movement.
Underpinning the whole project is to bring to prominence both the positive and negative aspects of the landscapes, environment and people within the south wales valleys to give a true reflection.
At present there are 255 miles (410km) of national cycle routes within the valleys. However it has been identified that there is a potential for a further 249 miles (401km) of walking and cycle paths. The implementation of MUDO is seen to use not only the existing roads and forestry paths but be a journey along former tramways, railways and canal towpaths remaining from south wales’ industrial past. In this way it is hoped the route will extend into the heart of the valleys and link together all the main towns with employment sites, visitor attractions, green spaces and country paths.
