16. THE EPHEMORAL FOREST

Alex Whitcroft and Erioseto Hendranata

Why is architecture so often nameless, static, distant and impersonal?

What if the architecture swayed with the wind and babbled like a brook; changed with the seasons and grew old with us? A built environment rather than a built environment.

Every passerby adds to the network of the forest: their names and origins recorded. The connections between the “trees” start to tell stories about the people who “planted” them and the forest becomes a place to meet or get lost in, a place to think and learn. And then the forest” will disappear and disperse just as it grew: dismantled, recycled and distributed.
