20. WJEC OFFICES

Capita Percy Thomas/ Model: Tim Green

The new building has been designed specifically for the Welsh Joint Education Committee to provide new administrative facilities that will form their new headquarters. The external envelope of the building comprises a number of materials including terracotta tile rain screen cladding to the rear elevations and aluminium cladding to the front. To tie the two materials together a reclaimed stone wall, randomly coursed, will run along the base of both. The concept for the bespoke aluminium cladding was a random mix of finishes and colours that would complement the natural woodland that surrounds the site. The reflections and shadows of the surrounding tress on the varying finishes of aluminium will help dissolve the mass of the building, the effect of which will vary considerably during the annual seasons as the vegetation flowers and grows and as the sunlight changes throughout the year and the day.
