21. BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA & CHORUS OF WALES FACILITIES

Capita Percy Thomas, Cardiff/ Model & Project Architect: Tim Green

This building has been designed specifically for BBC Wales to provide a new rehearsal / performance / recording studio for the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales with supporting rehearsal and administrative facilities. The existing envelope of the building seeks to continue the architectural language established by the existing Wales Millennium Centre, applying appropriate indigenous materials such as slate, brick and wane-edged timber cladding, to create a uniquely Welsh character.

The concept behind the interior of Hoddinott Hall, the main auditorium, was that of a traditional Welsh chapel. The concept emerged in response to the functional requirements of the space and draws upon the national choral tradition of Wales. Both the scale of the space and the internal finishes, such as the low level oak panelling with exposed masonry above is reminiscent of that found in a Victorian chapel, though in this instance precast concrete wall panels have replaced the masonry stonework.
