26. HERE AND HEREABOUTS

Richard Powell, Cardiff

The proposition is to present for exhibition, three hand-made folio books, with the intention of producing a short print run for distribution during the exhibition period. These brief unofficial guides, make photographic excursions into an unnamed but recognisable urban landscape, and carry the collective title ‘Here & Hereabouts’.

The common subject for investigation is, the physical moments of low visibility that perhaps never were part of, or have long since passed from architectures’ design, ambition or authority. But, through their continuing presence in the city fabric nonetheless exert a subtle, ambiguous and at times disrupting influence on our civic experience. Each volume follows a particular topic, and uses multiple images to engage the reader with both the poetic and banal, in the adaptations, incidents, reclamations, the raw and unresolved, as it were ‘the quick and the dead’ of the city landscape.

Reflecting on the discontinuous rhythms and flux of a contemporary city, the books disclose if not the identity of individuals, then certainly evidence of other and in some cases highly personal statements, priorities and needs. My purpose in presenting these books is to make a distinct and accessible contribution to the debate ahead.
