5. SUNKEN COURTYARD HOUSE

Gillard Associates, Cardiff

Designed to make use of a modest suburban site in the Vale of Glamorgan, this project is representative of an issue on a much wider scale in South Wales and across the UK: how to design and build intelligently and sensitively on areas of suburban infill sites ensuring that existing neighbourhoods are not compromised. The project was developed from three guiding principles:

The positioning and scale of the dwelling must be influenced by the geometry of the site and its constraints while making a minimum impact on the streetscape and on the neighbouring properties, but must also ensure an efficient use of very high quality living space.

The new dwelling should appear conventional in form and allow a limited and restrained choice of materials. By readdressing the vernacular in a much reduced manner the building should not stand out boldly but rather sit calmly in its heterogeneous surroundings.

The dwelling should strive towards being carbon neutral and cause minimal damage to the environment.
