7. A RURAL HOUSING MODEL FOR WALES

Davies Sutton Architects, Cardiff

In March 2008 a RIBA competition was held to design a low carbon development in Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire. The practice was short listed from over 90 entries across Europe to respond to the social, economic and environmental issues that are replicated in rural communities across the county.

Through the provision of Live:Work units, the resultant scheme looks at providing a flexible framework within which rural communities can develop and adapt. These are modelled on the existing Lawrenny vernacular housing, but their easily adaptable plans and affordable construction enables them to more readily respond to the present and future needs of their inhabitants.
