8. AFFORDABLE HOUSING OLD TOWN DOCK – NEWPORT

Powell Dobson Architects, Cardiff, for Fairlake Properties for Charter Housing

These 15 new homes form one plot within a larger tenure neutral affordable housing scheme. It includes 87 apartments all on a narrow riverfront site within the Old Town Dock area of Newport. Sustainability was the key driver from the outset, not just environmentally but in terms of the creation of a successful community.

Aiming to achieve a Code 5 rating under the Sustainable Code for Homes, the ‘Development Quality Requirement’ (DQR) and lifetime homes compliant scheme has been designed to be inherently energy efficient in servicing, construction, materiality and orientation. When achieved it will be one of the largest Code 5 high density developments in the UK.
